Frequently Asked Questions about Kinesio Taping®.

  • What is Kinesio® Tex Tape made from?

Kinesio® Tex Tape is made from a very thin, porous, 100% cotton fabric. It has a medical grade heat-activated adhesive. It is non-medicated and latex free - making it very skin friendly. For detailed information please visit our History page.

  • Is it Kinesio® Tex or the Taping technique that produces such effective results?

The technique is the most unique part, however the true benefits of the taping method were not realised until Kinesio® TexTape was developed. The method requires special tape that is skin friendly, with optimum elasticity and durability.

  • How long can a tape application be worn for?

Kinesio® Tex is designed to be worn for multiple days (3 to 5). An hour after application it will withstand athletic activity and showering without coming off. The water resistant type should be used for hands and feet and it is also useful for people who regularly take part in sporting activities.

  • How many applications will I get from one roll?

There is enough tape on one roll for 6-10 applications depending on the area and method of treatment.

  • What is the difference between blue, pink, black and beige Kinesio® Tex?

There are no physical product differences between the coloured tapes. In Japan they use them as a form of colour therapy. Beige is the most popular colour for oedema taping. Pink, black and blue are the most popular colours for sports and physiotherapy taping.

  • Can Kinesio® Tex be used on children?

Kinesio Taping® can work well for children, even young children. However, it should only be applied under the guidance and advice of a trained practitioner and it is very important to be aware of fragile or sensitive skin.

Take extra care when removing the tape and test on a small area before applying applications for longer periods of time.

  • Can KT be used with other therapies?

Kinesio Tex Tape can be used in conjunction with other therapies, including cryotherapy, hydrotherapy, massage therapy, and electrical stimulation.

  • What should I be aware of when using Kinesio® Tex?

Firstly, apply the tape one hour prior to sports activity or showering - this allows the glue to adhere fully.

The skin needs to be free of oil, sweat, lotion or water prior to applying the tape and after application the tape should be rubbed to activate the heat sensitive glue. Do not use a hairdryer to activate the glue.

You should try to avoid over-stretching the tape during application to avoid skin irritation. Reaction to the tape is rare, but you should look for signs of irritation especially with new or sensitive skin patients.

  • Do I need training to apply Kinesio® Tex?

KinesioTaping® for oedema is a lymph correction technique that facilitates circulatory and lymphatic flow. It is recommended that only practitioners trained in treating lymphatic disorders and the application of Kinesio® Tex use this technique as a treatment.

Kinesio Taping® for sports injury and physiotherapy should only be applied under the guidance/advice of a practitioner. Effective and successful results will only be obtained by applying the correct taping applications for a specific condition.

We recommend that anyone interested in using the tape attend at least a basic taping course.

  • What is the difference between a KTA approved course and a non-approved course?

An approved Kinesio Taping course is a course that has been recognised as meeting the educational standards set forth by the Kinesio Taping Association, the governing educational body of the Kinesio Taping Method. All approved courses offer the participant the most current and advanced teaching methods and protocols that have been specifically created to enhance KT proficiency.

All courses are taught by a recognised Certified Kinesio Taping Instructor (CKTI) who has met the training and re-certification training necessary to properly disseminate the KT Method and its reasoning.

Only approved courses are accepted in obtaining accreditation as a Certified Kinesio Taping Practitioner. In contrast, a non-approved course is a course and/or courses that has not met the educational standards, protocols and requirements established by the Kinesio Taping Association.

A non-approved course may be taught by an instructor who is not recognised or trained by the KTA, therefore KTA cannot guarantee the same high standards of teaching. Non-approved Kinesio Taping educational units will not be accepted in obtaining the accreditation necessary to become a CKTP.

  • How do I become a Certified Kinesio Taping® Practitioner or Instructor?

Certified Kinesio Taping® Practitioners must fulfill certain training criteria set by the International Kinesio Taping® Association. Once practitioner level has been achieved it is possible to advance to instructor status by attending the required training courses and taking the Instructor exam.

Kinesio Taping® Practitioners and Instructors are regulated by the International Kinesio Taping Association (KTA). To be a certified practitioner or instructor you must also be an association member.
